Worka
The town of Worka is located in the southern part of the Yirgacheffe region within the Gedeb woreda, an area renowned for its high-quality coffee production. Most residents of Worka are engaged in agriculture, with coffee being the oldest and most lucrative cash crop. Small-scale growers, some with less than an acre of land, carefully cultivate their coffee cherries and deliver them to community washing stations for processing. The region’s high elevation, coupled with its ideal geographical and climatic conditions, contributes to producing some of the cleanest and most consistent coffees in the greater Sidamo region.
This particular coffee underwent fermentation for 32 hours in water with a pH of 8.5 before being meticulously dried on raised beds for 17 days, ensuring optimal flavor development. The Worka washing station, managed by Tracon Trading, spans nearly 5 hectares and features 360 drying beds, accommodating coffee from 596 dedicated smallholder producers. With an impressive annual processing capacity of up to 1.5 million kilograms of red cherry, the station plays a vital role in maintaining the high standards of Worka’s exceptional coffee.
